Growing up, Mr. Sawyer spent a lot of time with a close family friend, who was not only a lawyer, but like a surrogate father to him. This friend’s influence had a tremendous impact on him, and he pursued the practice of law because of him. After more than four decades of being a practicing trial lawyer, Mr. Sawyer retired in 2004. He had served as partner at Crabbe, Brown, Jones, Potts & Schmidt since 1971, and prior to that was an associate at the firm, as well as an assistant law director in Springfield, OH. Mr. Sawyer earned a Bachelor of Arts from The Ohio State University in 1960 and later received a JD from Ohio Northern University in 1965. He was admitted to the Supreme Court of the United States I n1982, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in 1981, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio in 1967 and the state bar of Ohio in 1966.

A highlight of Mr. Sawyer’s career was in medical malpractice, where he represented hospitals and doctors. As a trial attorney, he always strived to reach verdicts with the best outcomes for his clients. It was a highlight going into court knowing he was on the right side. In addition, another highlight was speaking from the heart about the practice of law at a gathering of defense lawyers in Ohio that he presided over. In his career, Mr. Sawyer was a member of the DRI, the International Association of Defense Counsel, the Lawyers Club of Columbus, the Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorneys, the American Judicature Society, the Ohio State Bar Association, the Creighton Club, the American Arbitration Association and a variety of other professional organizations.
