Oliver W. Wanger, Attorney at Wanger Jones Helsley, P.C., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the legal industry.
Mr. Wanger commenced his career as a student at the Colorado School of Mines, where he completed coursework between 1958 and 1960. Transferring to the University of Southern California, he received a Bachelor of Science in 1963, followed by a Bachelor of Laws from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1966. Admitted by the California State Bar, he is also admitted to practice law before the U.S. District Court for the Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Central Districts of California, the U.S. Tax Court, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. At the inception of his professional career, he served as a deputy district attorney at the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office between 1967 and 1969 before making partner at Gallagher, Baker & Manock from 1969 to 1974. A longtime senior partner of McCormick, Barstow, Sheppard, Wayte & Carruth between 1974 and 1991, he cites the highlight of his career to be when he was unanimously nominated for United States District Judge for the Eastern District of California in 1991. Holding the role for 20 years, his caseload included complex environmental, copyright, patent, trademark, labor and employment, securities and diversity cases involving business and commercial disputes and insurance coverage and bad faith.
Since 2011, Mr. Wanger has been an attorney with Wanger Jones Helsley, P.C., in Fresno, CA. He has tried or presided over 600 jury trials to verdict in state and federal courts, and he currently offers private judging services including arbitration, mediation and private jury and mock trials. Also engaging in trial practice and trial consulting, he often serves as an expert witness. In addition, he is a co-founder and former dean, chair of the board of trustees, president and adjunct professor of law at the San Joaquin College of Law in Fresno. He also founded the San Joaquin Valley Inns of Court and maintains fellowship with the American College of Trial Lawyers, the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, the American Board of Trial Advocates, the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys and the California State Bar.
As a testament to his success, Mr. Wanger has accrued numerous accolades and honors. He was the recipient of a U.S. Congressional Tribute, a Civility Award through the American Board of Trial Advocates, an NAACP Image Award and a Professionalism Award from the Federal Bar Association. In addition, he was named a Central California Legal Services Champion of Justice. In 2018, he was presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, having previously been named among America’s Most Honored Professionals Top 1 Percent in 2016. Mr. Wanger was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in American Politics and Who’s Who in the West.
