Lewis H. Ferguson, retired lawyer for the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in law and finance.
Highly regarded for his professionalism, integrity and hard work, Mr. Ferguson celebrates a career that spanned 47 years before his retirement in 2018. He demonstrates an expertise across a number of disciplines, including business law, securities law, corporate law and finance. He came to prominence early on in his career as a law clerk to the Honorable Frank Murray for the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts and an associate of Covington & Burling LLP. From there, he joined Williams & Connolly LLP, where he was an associate and partner between 1975 and 2004. When the financial recession occured in 2008, Mr. Ferguson was prompted to shift to a role in finance as it had an incredible impact on his views on federal regulation. He became general counsel to the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, later joining its advisory board. In his retirement, Mr. Ferguson makes an impact as the chairman of the International Forum of Independent Audit Regulators. His recent statements have been in regards to its 25 Percent Initiative, its 2018 Budget and Strategic Plans, proposed auditing standards on auditing accounting estimates, and proposed amendments relating to the audit supervision when splitting responsibility with other firms.
Regarded by his peers as someone who made a positive contribution to his field, Mr. Ferguson was inspired to enter his profession because of the intellectual discipline that it required. Before establishing himself professionally, he earned two Bachelor of Arts from Yale University and King’s College in 1966 and 1968. He achieved a JD from Harvard University in 1971 and a Master of Arts from King’s College in 1972. Between 1971 and 1972, he achieved his bar admissions which allowed him to practice in the U.S. Tax court, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, the State of Massachusetts and the District of Columbia. In recognition of his professional excellence, he was the recipient of an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and a Who’s Who Lifetime Achievement Award. As he looks ahead, Mr. Ferguson intends to continue enjoying his retirement.
