Leon Eugene Irish, DPhil, Lawyer, Non-Profit Organization Executive and Educator, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in tax law, education and nonprofit work.
Dr. Irish pursued a career in law by first earning a Bachelor Arts in history at Stanford University in 1960. While matriculating at the institution, he took an aptitude test which pointed him in the direction of law. He continued his academic pursuits at the University of Michigan, receiving a JD in 1964. He later earned a DPhil in law from Oxford University in 1973. Since 2002, he has put to use his experience and skills in law as the president of the International Center for Civil Society Law. He has previously been a senior legal consultant for the World Bank, President and CEO of United Way International, Vice President and Senior Counsel for Aetna Life and Casualty Co., and President and Chairman of the International Center Not-for-Profit Law. Earlier in his career, Dr. Irish was a partner of Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue, a professor of law at the University of Michigan Law School and a member of Caplin & Drysdale. From 1967 to 1969, he was a law clerk to Associate Justice Byron R. White of the Supreme Court of the United States.
Furthermore, Dr. Irish considers being elected to the Residence Governor’s Council in Chestertown, MD as part of the Master Plan Committee as one of his career highlights. Throughout his career, he has maintained professional affiliation with the American Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar, the American Law Institute, the American College of Tax Counsel, the Council on Foreign Relations, the American College of Employee Benefits Council and the International Society Third Sector Research.
