John E. Hoffman Jr., Retired Partner at Shearman & Sterling, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the legal industry.

Amassing more than three decades of practiced industry experience, Mr. Hoffman is a prominent figure in the legal industry whose expertise is unmatched. Serving Shearman & Sterling in New York City for the entirety of his career, he commenced his tenure with the firm as an associate in 1960, serving in that capacity for eight years. From 1968 until his retirement in 1992, he served as longtime partner of the firm. In addition to these roles, he was a member of the management committee for Shearman & Sterling, as well as the advisory boards of the Antioch New England Graduate School and Caron Treatment Centers. He also held executive roles on the president’s council of Keene State College and council of advisors of the Cheshire Medical Center.

Mr. Hoffman holds a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Princeton University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Harvard University. He has been admitted to practice law in the state of New York, as well as before the U.S. District Court for the Northern, Eastern, and Southern Districts of New York, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second, Third, Fourth, Sixth and Tenth Circuits, and the Supreme Court of the United States. He also served as first lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957.

The co-author of “American Hostages in Iran: The Conduct of a Crisis,” published in 1965, Mr. Hoffman is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and Paul Harris fellow of Rotary International. In recognition of his exceptional undertakings, he was the recipient of the New England and Recovery Celebration Annual Richard J. Caron Award of Excellence in 2018, the Award for Contributions to Health and Welfare of Community from the Cheshire Health Foundation in 2015, and the Horace Mann Spirit of Service Citizen’s Award from Antioch University in 2014. Earlier in his career, he was presented with the New Hampshire Governor and Executive Council Commendation for Community Service in 2014, the Greater Keene Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award in 2011, and The Granite State Award from the Board of Trustees of the University System of New Hampshire in 2008.
