William J. Hewitt, Lawyer at Ropes & Gray LLP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in corporate and financial law.
Unsure of what he wanted to do in life, Mr. Hewitt enrolled as an English major at Harvard University. He eventually found his calling in law, which merged his interests with the promise of adventure. In 1974, he started his firm, Reboul, MacMurray, Hewitt, Maynard & Kristol in New York City. After building the firm and facilitating quality work through the lawyers at the firm, they merged with Ropes & Gray in 2003. Mr. Hewitt has helped all kinds of clients in their matters pertaining to corporate and financial law focused on private equity, mergers and acquisitions, private investment funds, public and private issues, portfolio company’s funds and financial institutions.
Mr. Hewitt earned an AB from Harvard in 1961, and an LLB in 1964. Upon graduating, he first worked as an associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore prior to opening his firm with his partners. In his career, Mr. Hewitt has been recognized on several occasions due to the quality of his work and concern for his clients. He was ranked among the Best Lawyers in America from 2005 to 2013 and was selecting among the World’s Leading Lawyers for Business by Chambers Global from 2004 to 2010. Similarly, he was selected among America’s Leading Lawyers for Business by Chambers USA from 2005 to 2009. From 2006 to 2011, Mr. Hewitt was featured among New York Super Lawyers. He has maintained professional affiliation with the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association and the Bar Association of The City of New York. Mr. Hewitt retired in 2009 and hopes he is remembered by his peers as a good lawyer and mentor.
