In addition to his legal career, he has been a visiting professor of law at the Transnational Law Institute with Washington & Lee University since 2007, where he teaches on matters of international legal reform, human rights, the death penalty and criminal law. Internationally recognized for his prominence in the field, he designed courses that assist the defense support services of the International Criminal Court and the Military Commissions at Guantanamo Bay and four law schools in Ukraine. Prior to his current career endeavors, he served as partner at Clarke Johnston Thorp & Rice and associate at Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps beginning in 1983.

Renowned for his book “The Importance of Teaching Ethics,” with a revised edition published in 2017, Mr. Rice holds a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Furman University and Doctor of Jurisprudence, summa cum laude, from California Western School of Law. Admitted to practice law in the state of California, he was also admitted before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court.

In recognition of his success, Mr. Rice was deemed a Fulbright Scholar in human rights and legal education reform at the University of Montenegro.  The eight-time recipient of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers President’s Commendation for Outstanding Service to Justice, he was also the recipient of the Abolitionist of the Year Award, the Champion of Justice Award, the Louise A. Halper Award for the promotion of diversity and acceptance in the law school community, and the International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award for academic research and educational excellence, among myriad others. Notably, he has been highlighted in several editions of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the West and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
