Chris Messerly, Partner at Robins Kaplan LLP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in personal injury law.
Commencing his career at Robins Kaplan LLP in 1981 as a part-time messenger, weekend receptionist and clerical aid, Mr. Messerly knew he wanted to go into a service profession from a young age. Desiring to serve individuals and help them during times of crisis or struggle, he discovered that he would better serve his community as a public advocate in the court, providing people with a voice who did not have a voice themselves. Ascending the ranks within Robins Kaplan, he became a clerk in 1983 and associate in 1986, serving in the latter role for six years. Since 1992, he has been a partner with the firm, where he focuses his practice on medical malpractice, personal injury, products liability and mass tort, among other areas. Alongside his primary roles with the firm, he has been an adjunct law professor at Hamline University since 1992.
Mr. Messerly holds a Bachelor of Arts from Bowdoin College and a Doctor of Jurisprudence, with honors, from Hamline University School of Law. He has been admitted to practice law in the states of Minnesota and Wisconsin, as well as before the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, the U.S. District Court for the District of North Dakota, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
As a testament to his success, Mr. Messerly has accrued several accolades and honors. Named “Lawyer of the Year” by Best Lawyers in America in 2018, he was also listed in “Top 100 Verdicts of 2017” by the National Law Journal and was named to the “Circle of Excellence” by Minnesota Lawyer in 2017. In 2010, he received the Pro Bono Award from the National Law Journal and was the first recipient of the Chris Messerly Community Service Award from the Magnuson chapter of Phi Alpha Delta. The same year, he was honored with the Arthur von Briesen Award from the National Legal Aid and Defender Association. Notably, Law360 named Robins Kaplan “Pro Bono Firm of 2010” for representing clients in the I-35W bridge collapse case, and Super Lawyers has named Mr. Messerly a “Minnesota Super Lawyer” since 2000. Much earlier in his career, he received an Excellence Award from the Minnesota Trial Lawyers Association for 1998-1999. He has also been highlighted in the seventh and 11th editions of Who’s Who in American Law.
