Throughout his life and career, Dr. Joe Piorkowski has worn a number of hats: Naval Officer, physician, professor, and attorney. A man of many talents, Dr. Piorkowski currently serves as principal and founding partner at the Piorkowski Law Firm, PC, which he opened in 2004. He has been teaching as an adjunct professor at the Georgetown University Law Center since 1992, and since 2005 he has volunteered his services as a physician to the American Red Cross, providing medical support to United States Armed Services personnel.
He began on his career path at Hofstra University, graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in social science in 1976. In 1977 he was commissioned as an ensign in the United States Navy, and while serving, continued his education. He pursued medical studies at the Philadelphia College Osteopathic Medicine, receiving a Doctor of Osteopathy in 1980. He then served as an intern in psychiatry at the National Naval Medical Center, and afterwards spent time as a staff physician on the U.S.S. Kennedy, and a flight surgeon.
He returned to school during this time as well, in pursuit of a law degree. He graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown University in 1988 and began his career in law, with a focus on medical issues. He became a partner at Williams & Connolly in 1997, and then a partner at Shook, Hardy & Bacon in 2001, before opening his own firm in 2004. As an attorney, he has represented scientists, physicians, hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies in various kinds of cases, including malpractice suits, product liability cases, peer review proceedings, and criminal investigations.
