John Cowden, Lawyer at Baker, Sterchi & Cowden, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in aerospace litigation.
Mr. Cowden has practiced law for nearly five decades concerning aerospace law, primarily in litigation defending lawsuits brought against various companies in the aviation industry such as airplane crashes and disputes about products. He has also primarily practiced in the areas of commercial litigation, general product liability and defense litigation. He has practiced at his current firm since 2000, and at Baker, Sterchi & Cowden since 1989. Prior to that, he was a partner at Morrison, Hecker, Curtis, Kuder & Parrish and an assistant to the attorney general in the State of Missouri. Mr. Cowden’s career in aerospace came about from a lifelong interest in airplanes, how they are manufactured, and how they operate. As a boy, he was fascinated by cars, airplanes, and technology. Mr. Cowden pursued this interest at Missouri State University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in 1967 and at the University of Missouri, where he earned a JD in 1970.
A highlight of Mr. Cowden’s career was the ability to maneuver through an extremely large multi-million dollar verdict against his client, which was devastating to the client and him, and see it through and have it reversed entirely to a judgment in favor of his client. What it taught him was that you are not always going to succeed as a trial lawyer. You’re not always going to obtain that favorable verdict, but you don’t give up and you continue to pursue the cause and many times, you prevail. He feels he was very fortunate to learn that early in his career. Another was when Mr. Cowden decided to leave his large, safe law firm and go out into a much smaller firm. It was a gamble, and it paid off and has been a wonderful experience for almost 30 years. His abilities in practicing law have resulted in such recognition as being on Chambers & Partners, USA since 2008 and receiving the Icon Award for Distinguished Leaders in Law from Missouri Lawyers’ Weekly.
