J. Michael Traynor, Senior Counsel at Cobalt Law, LLP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers.
With over 50 years of professional experience, Mr. Traynor provides guidance on the firm’s strategic directions and opportunities. A graduate of both the University of California at Berkeley, where he majored in economics, and Harvard Law School, Mr. Traynor continues a distinguished career. He has served as lead counsel in cases involving various issues, including the First Amendment, intellectual property, remedies and the conflict of laws.
He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, the California Academy of Appellate Lawyers and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is president emeritus of the American Law Institute, the recipient of its Distinguished Service Award and has served as an adviser on several of the Institute’s Restatement of the Law projects. He holds an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of South Carolina and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit honored him with its John P. Frank Outstanding Lawyer award, which was established by the Judicial Council of the Ninth Circuit to recognize a lawyer who has “demonstrated outstanding character and integrity; dedication to the rule of law; proficiency as a trial and appellate lawyer; success in promoting collegiality among members of the bench and bar; and a lifetime of service to the federal courts of the Ninth Circuit.”
Mr. Traynor is an Honorary Life Trustee of Earthjustice and of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, a past president of the Bar Association of San Francisco and a contributor of many articles in professional publications. He was also selected for inclusion in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in American Law and several other Who’s Who editions. Mr. Traynor lives in Berkeley with his wife Shirley W. Traynor, a retired clinical psychologist. Married in 1956, they have three children and four grandchildren.
