She first joined the firm as an associate in 1976, and quickly realized she had found her home. She advanced to partner in 1983 and accepted her current title in 2012. Her roles outside the company include probation officer in Hennepin County, Minnesota, law clerk for the Minnesota State Public Defender, and general counsel for the United States Treasury. Her expertise is in corporate securities and restructuring.

Ms. Hanson prepared for her endeavors by earning a JD from the University of Minnesota in 1976 and a Bachelor of Arts from Luther College in 1971. She was then admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and the New York State Bar. To keep in touch with her peers, she affiliated herself with prominent organizations like the New York City Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the University of Minnesota Law Alumni Association, and the ABA. Her efforts were rewarded with the Servant of Christ Award from Concordia College in 2016, the Outstanding Achievement Award from the University of Minnesota in 1999, and the Distinguished Service Award from Luther College in 1991.
