Prior to this illustrious role, he served as partner and head of the trusts and estates department at Solomon Blum Heymann LLP from 2004 to 2013, Shapiro Beilly Rosenberg Aronowitz Levy & Fox LLP from 1990 to 2004, and Newman Tannenbaum Helpern Syracuse & Hirschtritt from 1985 to 1990. Mr. Materna commenced his career as a trusts and estates attorney with Finley Kumble Wagner Heine Underberg & Casey from 1980 to 1985, Dreyer & Traub from 1976 to 1980, and Chadbourne Parke Whiteside & Wolff from 1973 to 1976.
A frequent lecturer in his field, Mr. Materna has contributed myriad articles to professional journals and has given seminars on wills and trusts. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Jurisprudence from Columbia University, earned in 1969 and 1973, respectively. He has since been admitted to practice law in New York and Florida, as well as before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, the United States Supreme Court, the United States Tax Court and the United States Court of Claims.
Alongside his primary endeavors, Mr. Materna enjoys giving back to his community through his involvement with the New York chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, the Catholic Interracial Council, the Catholic Archdiocese of New York, and the Memorial Sloan Kettering National Trusts and Estates Association. Prior to delving into his field, he also served on active duty in the U.S. Army as a member of the New York State National Guard, having subsequently been honorably discharged.
In an effort to remain aware of recent changes within the legal industry, Mr. Materna has maintained affiliation with numerous organizations, such as the American Bar Association, the Florida Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the New York City Bar Association, and the New York County Lawyers Association, where he has remained on the committee on trusts and estates, committee on professional ethics, committee on taxation and committee on surrogates court. Likewise, he has been a member of the committee on trusts and estates with the Queens County Bar Association and has been the alumni class president of the Columbia College Alumni Association of Columbia University since 1969.
As a testament to his success, Mr. Materna has accrued myriad accolades. The recipient of an AV Peer Review Rating through Martindale-Hubbell for over 25 years, he was named among the Top Trusts and Estates Attorneys in New York City by Avenue Magazine, as well as Top 100 Trusts and Estates Attorneys in New York State by the American Society of Legal Advocates. The Arthritis Foundation further gave him the Planned Giving Award and the Discovery Alliance Award in 1994 and 1995, respectively, and he was named an accredited estate planner by the National Association of Estate Planners in 1995. Most recently, he was named a Top Trusts and Estates Attorney by the Regina Coeli Legacy Society in 2011.
Married to Dolores Corio with three daughters, all of which graduated from Columbia College, Mr. Materna enjoys music, history, theater, politics, antique cars and traveling in his spare time. He has been highlighted in the 34th edition of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, as well as several editions of Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the East and Who’s Who in the World.
