Drawing upon more than 30 years of professional experience, Mr. Pate is a distinguished lawyer who currently serves Cozen O’Connor as partner. Focusing his practice on insurance coverage, professional liability insurance coverage and property insurance, he has extensive litigation experience in several areas of disputes and fraud, having tried more than 45 first-party extracontractual cases to verdict. Prior to serving Cozen O’Connor, he was a partner at Norton Rose Fulbright, an associate with Fulbright and Joworski, and a law clerk to Judge Joe J. Fisher with the United States District Court of Texas. Alongside his primary endeavors, he was formerly an adjunct professor at the University of Houston Law School.
Mr. Pate received a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from Vanderbilt University in 1980, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the Vanderbilt University Law School in 1983. While obtaining his law degree, he served as a research editor for the Vanderbilt Journal and maintained membership with Phi Beta Kappa. He was subsequently admitted to practice law in Texas and New York, as well as before the United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the United States District Court for the Southern, Western and Eastern Districts of Texas, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
Maintaining affiliation with the American Bar Foundation and the American College of Coverage Counsel, where he served on the board of regents, Mr. Pate is additionally associated with the Texas Supreme Court Historical Society, the Texas Bar Foundation, the Texas Young Lawyers Association, and the Sons of the American Revolution, where he was president of the Paul Carrington chapter for one year at the turn of the century. A contributor of myriad articles to professional journals, he has also written for the “Handbook of Texas” and “Appleman on Insurance Law.”
As a testament to his professional success, Mr. Pate has accrued numerous accolades throughout his career. Recently named to the Best Lawyers in America for 2018-2019, he was also named to the Irish Legal 100 in 2017 and Chambers and Partners USA: Texas: Insurance for 12 consecutive years between 2006 and 2018. In addition, he received the Client Choice Award, the John Appleman Award, the Olshan Award and the Thomas Segalla Award between 2004 and 2018.
