A practicing attorney for more than five decades, Mr. Finkel has been serving in an of counsel capacity at Finkel Law Firm LLC in Columbia, SC, since 2007. A founding member of the firm since 1970, his areas of concentration include insurance law, criminal procedure, business law, debtors and creditors rights/bankruptcy, commercial litigation and unfair trade practices, among many others. In addition to his work in law practice, he has served in academia at several universities and colleges, he has been a lecturer of law and management at Columbia Junior College of Business, an adjunct professor of trial advocacy and insurance law at the University of South Carolina School of Law and has served as a Capstone lecturer of medical-legal at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He was a distinguished visiting professor and subsequently a professor of law at the Charleston School of Law, where he currently holds the rank of professor emeritus. Furthermore, Mr. Finkel taught for a number of other organizations, such as the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy and the Richland Memorial Hospital Continuing Medical Education Program.
Mr. Finkel is a member of the board of visitors for Charleston Southern University. He is an active member of the South Carolina Bar Resolution of Fees Disputes Board for the Ninth Judicial Circuit and a hearing officer for the South Carolina Department of Insurance. He is a longstanding member of dozens of professional organizations, including the American Bar Association, American Association for Justice and South Carolina Association for Justice, and is a Life Member of the American Law Institute, a Senior Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, and a Fellow of the American Bar Association.
Mr. Finkel has served as a Special Judge of the South Carolina Circuit Court for the Fifth Judicial Circuit and as a Special Judge for the Richland County Family Court. He has also been a hearing officer for the South Carolina Department of Environmental Control. He is currently a certified Circuit Court Arbitrator. Mr. Finkel is a past President of The South Carolina Association for Justice f/k/a The South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association and has been on the House of Delegates and the Board of Directors for the South Carolina Bar. He has also served on the Governor’s Sentencing Guidelines Commission and as a Commissioner of the South Carolina Appellate Defense Commission. He was also appointed to with the South Carolina Legislature’s Real Property Task Force.
Mr. Finkel has been a speaker and lecturer in his field and has contributed multiple articles to various professional publications and academic journals as author and co-author. Listed in every edition of Best Lawyers in America since its inaugural publication in 1983, Mr. Finkel has also been named to South Carolina Super Lawyers and has been cited in more than 50 editions of Who’s Who, including Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law and Who’s Who in the World. One of his proudest moments was when one of the cases he worked on that went to the U.S. Supreme Court, Lucas v. the South Carolina Coastal Council, was documented in Constitutional Law, real property and economic texts.
To prepare for his career, Mr. Finkel pursued a formal education at New York University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. He subsequently attended the University of South Carolina, receiving a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1970. He was admitted to practice law in the state of South Carolina in 1970, as well as before the U.S. District Court of South Carolina, the Fourth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the District of Columbia between 1970 and 1973.
As a testament to his professional success, Mr. Finkel has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He has been listed in all editions of The Best Lawyers in America since 1983, in the areas of bankruptcy and credit-debtor rights law, commercial litigation and insurance law. Mr. Finkel has notably been highlighted in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in the World in the World, and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
