He has practiced law as a partner of Elkins, PLC, since 1989, and strongly believes in taking a reasonable, practical, and pragmatic approach as opposed to a combative one. His methods have served him well over the years; he was named among the Best Lawyers in America, the Outstanding Lawyers of America, and the Louisiana Super Lawyers, and was featured in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in American Law. Mr. Elkins also holds an AV Rating from Martindale-Hubbell and membership with The Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers. His main areas of practice are real estate development, financing, tax and financial development.
Mr. Elkins’ interest in law began in the 1970s, when he became involved with student government. He really enjoyed the work, so he earned a JD from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, in 1976 and an LLM from Georgetown University in 1979. He then became a board certified tax attorney through the Louisiana Bar Association Specialization Board, admitted to practice in the State of Louisiana and before the U.S. Tax Court. Mr. Elkins is particularly proud of completing his schooling while serving on active duty in the Navy; it opened a lot of doors for him. His first job in the field was attorney for the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General Corps, followed by partner of Barham & Churchill and of Gelpi, Sullivan. He was also a visiting professor of American business law at Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest, Hungary.
When Mr. Elkins isn’t working, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Kate, four children, and 11 grandchildren. He has served his community in many capacities, including service as an elder at the St. Charles Ave. Presbyterian Church.
