Charles W. Reese, Partner at Burke, Williams & Sorensen LP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in law.
Sensitive to the needs of the people, Mr. Reese prides himself on making every effort to understand the motivations behind a negotiation or legal issue. He believes that understanding more than just the legalities helps him build cases that allow his clients to come to civil resolutions, sometimes even before litigation occurs. Mr. Reese has spent more than 35 years in the field, and has successful reported decisions in the California state appellate courts, the California Supreme Court, and the federal courts. He started out as a business lawyer before deciding to focus on litigation and appellate law. Since then, he has garnered considerable experience working with both public entities and private businesses in the mining, engineering, chemical, and construction industries on matters like regulatory compliance and cost recovery at many environmentally contaminated sites. He is currently lending his expertise to Burke, Williams & Sorensen LP, Reese Interests, and Clotilde deMartini Trusts.
The highlight of Mr. Reese’s career was a trial case he won, Civic Partners v. City of Stockton. It was appealed up to the Court of Appeals and then to the California Supreme Court. He was privileged to argue the case before the California Supreme Court and win a 7-0 decision. Further, the case was published and the court renamed the statute from the California Tort Claims Act to the California Government Code Claims Act to conform to his view. It was a significant decision affecting all government entities in the state.
Mr. Reese’s professional journey began at the encouragement of his friends. He had been considering a career in medicine, but they convinced him he was better suited for law. Mr. Reese proceeded to earn a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Washington and Lee University in 1866 and a JD from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1969. He also became admitted to practice in the state of California and before the United States Supreme Court. To keep in touch with his peers, he joined prominent professional organizations like the ABA, the Alameda County Bar Association, the Bar Association of San Francisco, and the State Bar of California.
When Mr. Reese isn’t working, he enjoys helicopter skiing and duck hunting, as well as competing in triathlons and marathons. He has completed 12 marathons and 16 triathlons, including five Ironman races.
