Prior to establishing her firm, she garnered legal experience as a senior associate with Ivey & Ragsdale from 2005 to 2010, as a partner and general practitioner with Smalley & Carr, LLC, from 1996 to 2005, and with a private practice from 1988 to 1995. From 1984 to 1988, Ms. Smalley was an associate attorney and partner with Gibson & Smalley, PC, and from 1983 to 1984 she was a legal clerk and administrative assistant with the Tuscaloosa County District Court. Earlier in her career, she was an associate with Williams & Pradat from 1982 to 1983, and a personal injury claims adjuster with State Farm Mutual Auto Insurance from 1978 to 1982.

Ms. Smalley was inspired to pursue a career in the field by her interest in fairness. She strongly believes in giving voice to people who are not always treated fairly, including small businesses, children, women, or anybody else who has had been taken advantage of unfairly. She began her career as a student at the University of Alabama, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1975, while also serving as a state lobbyist for the school. She later earned a Juris Doctor with the School and was admitted to practice law in the state of Alabama in 1978. She is a certified instructor through the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. Looking toward the future, Ms. Smalley is currently running for the Alabama State Supreme Court, and intends to continue following the creed that if there is injustice for one, then there is injustice for all.
