James B. Sales, LLB, Of Counsel at Norton Rose Fulbright, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in law.

Finding that the legal profession was a good fit for him, Mr. Sales commenced his career as a student at the University of Texas, where he received a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Laws, with honors, in 1956 and 1960, respectively. During his studies, he received the Order of the Coif and served as an associate editor of the Texas Law Review. Subsequent to his graduation, Mr. Sales joined Fulbright & Jaworski as a trial lawyer, soon progressing to senior partner and head of its litigation department, a position he fulfilled until his retirement in 2000. Since that time, he has been acting as of counsel with Norton Rose Fulbright with a focus on complex litigation products liability cases.

Notably, Mr. Sales formerly served as president of the Houston Bar Association in 1980, where he helped in the launch of the Houston Volunteer Lawyer Program to provide legal aid to underprivileged citizens in the greater Houston region. In addition, he was designated first chair of the Houston Bar Foundation in an effort to raise funds for the program, and an award was later named in his honor entitled the James B. Sales Pro Bono Leadership Award. Alongside his primary endeavors, Mr. Sales was elected as president of the State Bar of Texas in 1988, where he initiated the Texas Lawyers Assistance Program, a network of intervention programs designed to help rehabilitate lawyers who struggled with alcohol and drug abuse. As a result of his selfless efforts, he was presented with a special award from the lawyers he had helped with his programs.

A fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers since 1977 and American College of Trial Lawyers since 1978, Mr. Sales has accrued several accolades during his impressive career. During his tenure as a Texas delegate to the American Bar Foundation House of Delegates, a role he fulfilled for 20 years, he was honored with the Outstanding Service Award for distinguished service to the legal profession and service to the public in 2009. In addition, the American College of Trial Lawyers presented him with the Samuel E. Gates Litigation Award in 2011 and the Texas Association of Civil Trial and Appellate Specialists gave him a Lifetime of Excellence in Advocacy Award. The recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Texas School of Law in 2005, Mr. Sales further accepted the President’s Award from the State Bar of Texas, the National Outstanding Fellow’s Award from the National Conference of Bar Presidents, and the Karen H. Susman Jurisprudence Award from the Anti-Defamation League.

A celebrated figure in his field, Mr. Sales has also been honored in Best Lawyers in America since 1989 and was named a Texas Super Lawyer by Texas Monthly magazine. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the legal industry, the Supreme Court of Texas appointed him to chair the Texas Access to Justice Commission, where his primary duties involved implementing new programs dedicated to expanding access to the justice system for low-income Texas residents. Soon thereafter, the Commission employed the James B. Sales “Boots on the Ground” Award, an accolade presented to lawyers who have lent their time and expertise to helping underprivileged Texas citizens.

In 2011, Mr. Sales accrued several other honors and accolades, including the Outstanding Fifty Year Lawyer Award from the Texas Bar Foundation. Most honorably, the mayor and City Council of Houston established May 3, 2011 as James B. Sales Day in Houston. He has been highlighted in several editions of Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest and Who’s Who in the World.
