Joanne Parsons Underhill, Attorney at Underhill Law, P.C., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in law.
Known as a leader and innovator in the field of law, Ms. Underhill continues to make her mark on peers and community alike. She currently heads an eponymous practice in Greenwood Village, Colo., where she offers services relating to business transactions, taxes, real estate, and governance. Her clients love that she takes a personal interest in her cases, and that her knowledge and dedication result in efficient and effective advice. Prior to opening the firm in 2014, Ms. Underhill garnered experience as an attorney and shareholder of Underhill & Underhill, Professional Corporation, a taxpayer representative to the Internal Revenue Service, a shareholder of Popham, Haik, Schnobrich & Kaufman, Ltd., a special counsel for Gorsuch, Kirgis, Campbell, Walker & Grover, an assistant general counsel and a trial attorney for the Federal Home Loan Bank Board and FSLIC, and an associate of Howrey & Simon.
The highlight of Ms. Underhill’s career occurred when she was at the federal agency. She represented the government in regulatory lawsuits and in litigation involving the FSLIC as receiver for insolvent federally-insured savings and loan associations, which included lawsuits brought against former directors, officers, and borrowers of failed savings and loan associations. She also hired and managed outside legal counsel for commercial and residential foreclosures, debtor bankruptcies, and other types of state court litigation for FSLIC receiverships throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
Ms. Underhill prepared for her journey by obtaining a JD from Washington College of Law at American University in 1979 and a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Yale University in 1973. She was particularly proud of this achievement, as she was a member of the first class at Yale University to include women undergraduates. After she completed her schooling, she became admitted to practice before the District of Columbia, the U.S. Temporary Emergency Court of Appeals, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, the state of Colorado, the Colorado Supreme Court, and the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado.
As a testament to her success, Ms. Underhill was recognized as a Top Attorney by the Global Directory of Who’s Who in 2017. She was also honored with a Power of One Award from Colorado Women in 1998, a Woman of Distinction Award from the Girl Scouts Mile Hi Council in 1997, a National Honor Award from Girl Scouts of America, and a Dean’s Scholarship from American University. Her achievements were highlighted in the 11th edition of Who’s Who in American Law.
