Richard C. Godfrey, Partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in litigation.

Following in his attorney grandfather’s footsteps, Mr. Godfrey has served as a lawyer at Kirkland & Ellis LLP for nearly 40 years. He started with the firm as an associate in 1979, and became a partner in 1985. His responsibilities include representing large corporations and individuals in large complex litigation, complex commercial litigation, and trial and appellate work. One of his more notable cases was when he represented BP in the litigation arising from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. He currently represents the general manager arising out of the vehicle ignition switch recalls.

Mr. Godfrey prepared for his endeavors by earning a JD from Boston University in 1979 and a Bachelor of Arts from Augustana College in 1976. He has been admitted to practice in the state of Illinois, and before the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, the United States Claims Court, the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. Additionally, he is admitted before the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, the United States Courts of Appeals for the Fifth and Ninth Circuits, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana, the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, the United States District Court of Colorado, the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the United States Tax Court.

As a testament to his success, Mr. Godfrey was listed as the Best Lawyer in America for Bet-the-Company Litigation in Commercial Litigation and Litigation – Antitrust by The Best Lawyers in America in 2018, and was named to the Warren E. Burger Society in 2008. He was listed as One of America’s Leading Business Lawyers in Litigation: General Commercial by Chambers USA between 2004 and 2005. His achievements were listed in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the Midwest, and Who’s Who in the World.
