Zacharias Sundström, Lawyer at Nordic Law Oy Ab, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in European and maritime law.

A legal professional for more than 50 years, Dr. Sundström started his career as counsel at the Finnish Steamship Company before relocating to the United States to be an associate at the Law Offices of Haight, Gardner, Poor & Havens. Following this, Dr. Sundström pursued academia, teaching at the University of Helsinki, the University of California, Berkeley, Stockholm University, Addis Ababa University, Uppsala University, and the University of Turku. In 2016, he became counsel of Nordic Law Oy Ab, having helped found the firm in 1970.

Dr. Sundström holds a number of degrees in law that have aided and supported his legal career. He earned an LLB and LLM from the University of Helsinki before receiving a master’s degree in corporate law from The University of Chicago. He returned to the University of Helsinki to receive an LLD in 1965. In 1966, he earned a Master of Letters from the University of Cambridge, and in 2012, Dr. Sundström earned a PhD in law from the University of Eastern Finland.

In his career, Dr. Sundström has been involved with the International Alliance of Law Firms, the International Federation of European Law, JF Stockholm, The European Air Law Association, the Academy of European Law, Svenska Sjörättsföreningen, Juridiska Föreningen, and Swedish Maritime Law Association. He has authored and edited numerous publications, including, “Economic Integration. The Case of the Mano River Union,” “Essays in Honour of Erik Castren,” “Europeiska Bolagsratt” and “Comment on the Provision on the Extra-contractual Liability of the Draft Convention.” Dr. Sundström attributes his success to his mentors, Prof. Kurt Lipstain at Clair College in Cambridge, England, who was a supervisor to him, and Prof. Sawyer Menchikoff, who was his supervisor in comparative law in Chicago. Looking towards the future, he endeavors to focus more on teaching.
