Dr. Appel has a diverse background in the fields of law and medicine as an attorney with the Law Office of A. R. Appel and director at the Southern Institute for Forensic Neuropsychology. She previously served as director of the Neuropsychological Assessment and Treatment Center at the Center for Neuropsychology Services and held a private practice in psychology. Dr. Appel has also been an educator with the University of Rhode Island, Brown University, the University of Connecticut, Southern Illinois University, St. Francis College, Queens College and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Dr. Appel first received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Vermont and a Master of Arts from Mount Holyoke College. Completing postgraduate work with Yeshiva University and Hofstra University, she earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the City University of New York. After working in education and mental health for many years, she returned to her studies to get a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Nova Southeastern University.

Throughout her career, Dr. Appel has been honored for her achievements, including with a Scholar’s Award from American’s First Mental Health Court. She has been an honoree of the Psychological Association of Northern New York, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and Nova Southeastern University. She has received a Hartford Salute Award, was inducted into Sigma Xi and Psi Chi, and was awarded fellowships with the City University of New York and the National Institute of Mental Health.
