Phyllis Federico, Attorney and Partner at Schmidt & Federico, P.C., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in family law, divorce, prenuptial, postnuptial and paternity matters.
For more than 26 years, Ms. Federico has concentrated her work in the trial of complex domestic relations and family law matters and has worked with a number of prestigious firms specializing in this area of the law. She practices in the realms of matrimonial and domestic relations law, including divorce, custody, modifications, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, and paternity. On a daily basis, she handles high-conflict disputes with an emphasis on business valuation and custody litigation.
In college, Ms. Federico faced the dilemma of not being sure what to do with her life. It was her mother’s suggestion that she go to law school, joking that she would be good in this profession because she liked to talk. Finding that her mother was right, Ms. Federico earned a JD at Suffolk University Law School in 1985. After graduating, she worked for Eileen Shaevel, a partner at a firm who became her mentor. Through Ms. Shaevel’s guidance, Ms. Federico was able to become partner and one of the founding members at her current law firm, Schmidt & Federico, P.C. in 1994.
Ms. Federico is also known for her volunteer work. She spends some of her time working for the pilot program, which takes a full day and a number of hours prior to its conference. It is very important to her that the program is offered to middle and lower income people who would not have been able to hire a lawyer of her caliber, to engage a retired judge for consultation, or a mental health professional like the one who partners with her in this program. She takes pride in touching upon a part of society that many don’t have exposure to and helping people who often can’t afford the services necessary to see their way out of their problems. In addition to this work, she has been involved with Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, the Boston Bar Association, the Massachusetts Association, and the Massachusetts Family and Probate Inns of Court. Ms. Federico has also written article on family law practice, co-edited the “Massachusetts Divorce Law Practice Manual,” and coauthored sections in “Massachusetts Divorce Law Practice Manual” and the “Massachusetts Family Law Source.”
Ms. Federico’s work in this field has been recognized on numerous occasions. Since 2004, Ms. Federico has been named a Super Lawyer by Boston Magazine, and in 2016, she was considered one of New England’s Super Lawyers. She has also received the honors of Best Lawyers in America from Naifeh & Smith, one of the Top 50 Female Attorneys from Boston Magazine, and Massachusetts Top Women of the Law from Lawyers Weekly. Furthermore, Ms. Federico has an AV Preeminent Rating from Martindale-Hubbell and is an AV Preeminent Attorney Judicial Edition.
