Mitchell Mirviss, Partner at Venable LLP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in commercial litigation, product liability and intellectual property.
Mr. Mirviss was drawn to the field of law with the realization that he could help disadvantaged communities and families. In his nearly 30 year career, he has been successful in helping his clients in a number of matters. Mr. Mirviss credits his success to taking every case and every client seriously while remembering there are two sides to every issue. He respects all sides of an argument and endeavors to go beneath the surface on every matter. He has been with Venable LLP since 1990. Part of his significant work with Venable has included representing majority owners of the Atlanta Hawks, Thrashers, and Philips Arena in a $170 million dollar high-profile case. In addition, he has contributed significant work in patent infringement, labor law, fraud, tortious interference and energy trading. Mr. Mirviss has helped to overturn seven large, multimillion dollar punitive damage verdicts and sanctions judgments totaling more than $400 million and resulting in no tort liability.
Throughout his career, Mr. Mirviss is particularly proud of all of the pro bono and advocacy work he has done. This work includes leading a class action suit for up to 10,000 Baltimore foster children in litigating and monitoring a federal consent decree requiring broad protections for their safety and well-being. He has served multiple terms as president of the board of director of Advocates for Children & Youth, Inc. His pro bono work extends to areas of civil rights, domestic violence, disability, and voting rights. Mr. Mirviss graduated magna cum laude from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1978. He continued at Harvard Law School, receiving a Juris Doctor, cum laude, in 1985. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second, Fourth, and Sixth Circuits, as well as the U.S. Court of Federal Claims and the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.
In recognition of his work, Mr. Mirviss has been named one of the Best Lawyers in America and one of the top five lawyers of Influential Marylanders from The Daily Record. In addition, he has been included in Super Lawyers, and received a Champion for Children Award from the Maryland Citizens’ Review Board for Children. In 2011, he was presented with the Arthur W. Machen, Jr. Award from the Maryland Legal Services Corporation and he was named a Champion for Foster Children from A Step Closer Foundation. He received the Pro Bono “Hero” Award from the Maryland Pro Bono Resource Center and the People’s Choice Award for Pro Bono from the Maryland State Bar Association.
