Robert M. Hart, Retired Lawyer, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the legal industry.
A celebrated figure in the field of law, Mr. Hart has accrued nearly 40 years of professional excellence in his areas of expertise. A former senior vice president, general counsel, and secretary of the Alleghany Corporation in New York City from 1994 to 2011, he previously served as director and chair of Chicago Title from 1998 to 2000. He began his career as an associate with Donovan Leisure Newton & Irvine in London, England, from 1972 to 1973. Alongside his primary roles, Mr. Hart has also held the role of senior lecturer in law at Duke University since 1986.
To prepare for his prospective career, Mr. Hart sought out a formal education, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Marist College in 1966 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Duke University in 1969. He has been admitted to practice by the New York State Bar Association, as well as before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
Attributing his success to his mentors throughout his career, Mr. Hart has contributed to articles in professional journals. In recognition of his exceptional achievements, he has been named an honoree and senior fellow of Duke University since 1983. In addition, he was honored as a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who’s Who in 2017. However, the highlight of his career was developing portfolio insurance with LOR, which was meant to protect big investors if the stock market crashed. Although the portfolio failed, Mr. Hart developed a “super trust,” the biggest IPO the company has achieved. This exemption paved the way for the exchange trade funds.
