Notably, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled favorably in the case of Sorrell v. IMS Health Inc., 564 U.S. 552 (2011) upon Mr. Julin’s argument, resulting in the invalidation of three state laws and has subsequently been cited in more than 1,000 judicial decisions. Prior to his current engagement, Mr. Julin served as a partner with Hunton & Williams, LLP, from 2000 to 2016, partner and associate with Steel Hector & Davis, LLP, from 1981 to 2000, and summer associate with Ford Harrison Sullivan et al and Steel Hector & Davis in 1980.
Alongside his professional endeavors, Mr. Julin served as an adjunct professor in the School of Journalism and Communications at Florida International University in 1990, a lecturer on media law at the College of Law at the University of Florida in 2006, a lecturer of Knight-Wallace Fellows at the University of Michigan in 2003, and a lecturer at Miami-Dade College and Florida International University from 1983 to 2014.
To prepare for his illustrious career, Mr. Julin first sought out a formal education, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts with high honors from the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Florida in 1978. He followed this accomplishment with a Doctor of Jurisprudence with honors from the College of Law at the University of Florida in 1981. While pursuing his degrees, he served as the editor-in-chief of the Independent Florida Alligator from 1977 to 1978 and chief tax editor of the Florida Law Review from 1980 to 1981. He has been inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and the Order of the Coif. Mr. Julin has been admitted to practice before the Florida Bar, the District of Columbia Bar, the US Supreme Court, the US Court of Appeals for the First, Second, Fifth and Eleventh Circuits, the US District Court for the Southern, Middle, and Northern Districts of Florida, and the US District Court for the District of Columbia.
A respected voice in his industry, Mr. Julin maintains affiliation with numerous professional organizations, including the University of Florida Law Center Association, Inc., where he has been on the board of trustees since 2013, and the Union Internationale des Avocats, where he has been on the executive committee and governing board and the deputy director for international relations since 2014. He is a former member of the Media Law Resource Center Defense Counsel Section, and he served on the Forum Committee on Communications Law with the American Bar Association from 1990 to 2016. Furthermore, Mr. Julin has served the Florida Bar as chair of the Media and Communications Law Committee from 1991 to 1992 and 2009 to 2010, chair of the Media Law Conference in 1990 and 2010, and seminar chair of the U.S. Supreme Court First Amendment Decisions from 2001 to 2016. In addition, Mr. Julin has held multiple speaking engagements and written publications, including references in books, articles in professional journals, and references in congressional records. He has also been covered by the media more than 700 times throughout his career.
In recognition of his exceptional achievements, Mr. Julin has been honored with several accolades, including being named as among the Top 100 Florida Lawyers and Top 100 Miami Lawyers by Super Lawyers from 2015 to 2017. In addition, he was named Florida First Amendment Lawyer of the Year and Florida Media Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers in 2014, honored among the Best Lawyers in America in First Amendment Practice from 1993 to 2017, and honored as a Nationwide First Amendment Litigation Notable Practitioner by Chambers USA from 2009 to 2017. Furthermore, Daily Business Review has highlighted Mr. Julin several times, naming him the Most Effective Public Interest Lawyer in 2015 and Most Effective First Amendment Lawyer in 2005. An AV-Preeminent Lawyer by Martindale-Hubbell in 2017, Mr. Julin has been inducted into the Independent Florida Alligator Hall of Fame and was named a Florida Super Lawyer from 2006 to 2017, as well as a Florida Top Lawyer from 2004 to 2015. He was awarded the PEN USA Award of Honor in 2007.
