Recognized as a Texas Super Lawyer, Mr. Almaraz has maintained a private legal practice for more than 30 years. In this position, he draws upon former experience as an assistant United States attorney, a role he held from 1980 until forming his own firm in 1985. During this time, he was the sole prosecutor of five different counties in the Laredo Division of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. He is also a former assistant district attorney, having served as a sole prosecutor in Starr County for two years. Throughout his career, Mr. Almaraz has tried more than 1,000 cases.
Inspired by a desire to make a difference, Mr. Almaraz attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1970. He continued his studies with the school, completing a Master of Arts in elementary education in 1972. He went on to complete a JD at St. Mary’s School of Law in 1977.
Since completing formal education, Mr. Almaraz has been admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
In recognition of his contributions to the field of criminal defense, Mr. Almaraz has been named among the Top 100 Trial Lawyers by National Trial Lawyers. This year, he will also be celebrating 20 years as an appointed member of the Judicial Selection Committee with the United States Magistrate. Mr. Almaraz is renowned for establishing the Laredo Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and he is a former director of the Texas Young Lawyers Association.
