With more than 35 years of professional experience, Mr. Kieve is a trusted named in resolving challenging, high stakes disputes in the field of law. He has represented major U.S. and foreign companies and individuals concerning trials, appeals, and settlements. Mr. Kieve’s key areas of focus include securities, insurance coverage, construction, environmental, derivative, financial services, commodities trading, antitrust, contract, RICO, insurance sales practices, products liability, defamation, personal injury, employment, discrimination, real estate, mine disaster, and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Mr. Kieve has also been an integral figure in helping his clients with complex foreign parties and issues, major government contract matters, including civil and criminal false claims act cases, and formal and informal administrative proceedings.
Mr. Kieve began his career by first attending Stanford University in the late 1960s. He continued his education at Oxford University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts, with honors, in 1971, and a Master of Arts in 1975. He later earned a JD from the University of New Mexico in 1972, serving as the editor of the New Mexico Law Review and the Natural Resources Journal while pursuing his degree. He was also a teaching assistant in constitutional law and won Best Brief and Best Oral Argument during a National Moot Court Competition. He is admitted to the bar in the states of California, New York, Virginia, New Mexico, as well as the District of Columbia, and before the United States Supreme Court, nine federal circuit courts and ten federal district courts.
Prior to his current position with the Kieve Law Offices, Mr. Kieve gained experience at several other firms. Early in his career, he was the Law Clerk for the Honorable Edmund L. Palmiere and the Honorable Oliver Seth. From 1974 to 1987, he worked as an associate with Steptoe & Johnston. After this position, he was made partner at Debevoise & Plimpton, remaining at this firm until 2000. The same year, Mr. Kieve accepted the roles of Principal Vice President, Assistant General Counsel and Manager of Legal Department and Head of the Department’s Litigation and Claims Group with the Bechtel Group, Inc. until 2002. Before becoming principal at the Kieve Law Offices, Mr. Kieve was partner at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges LLC from 2002 to 2008.
An expert in the industry, Mr. Kieve has been involved with a number of professional organizations. He has served on many committees of the American Bar Foundation, including the Commission on Immigration and the Coordinating Committee on Civil Justice Reform, and he is a Sustaining Life Fellow of the foundation. Mr. Kieve is a member of the California State Bar, the National Native American Bar Association, the Litigation Counsel of Camera, the Commercial Bar Association, the Diversity Law Institute, the Trial Law Institute, and the District of Columbia Circuit Judicial Conference. Mr. Kieve was a leading member of the transition team for California Attorney General Kama Harris from 2010 to 2011 and is a founding member of the Northern California Chapter of the American Constitution Society.
Throughout his career, Mr. Kieve has been the recipient of numerous accolades, including repeated selection as one of The Best Lawyers in America in the field of commercial litigation, and as one of the Super Lawyers in the Bay Area. In 2018, he was recognized as the Corporate USA Today “Best Commercial Litigation Lawyer – San Francisco Bay.” For his legal abilities and ethical standards, Mr. Kieve has been ranked as AV-Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell for more than 30 years, and he holds the highest possible rating by Avvo. In addition, he received a “Living the Dream” Award from the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the Bay Area, California Business Trial Lawyer of the Year from ACQ5 Law Awards in 2016, and an Award of Excellence from the ABA Section of Litigation in 2006.
