With more than 35 years of experience in the legal industry, Ms. Doherty she focuses on securities, capital markets, corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions. Serving both Canadian and international clients, she works to resolve dispute resolutions, settlements, and prosecuting litigious matters. Additionally, she has served as chair of several joint seminars with Miller Thompson and Deloitte & Touche & AON.
Ms. Thomson credits her success in the field to possessing a natural ability in connecting with others and building trust. Ms. Doherty has been a senior partner at Miller Thomson LLP since 1993, having previously been a partner at Shibley Righton LLP. In addition to these roles, she has held management positions at AVANTI! Canada, DEME, Foster Moore, Hamilton Beach Brands, Inc., IDCO Canada Holdings Inc., Monster Therapy, Return On Intelligence, and the Victorian Order of Nurses.
Prior to entering law, Ms. Doherty worked as a physical education teacher after graduating from McGill University with a Bachelor of Education in 1970. Sensing a call to handle legal matters, she enrolled in Osgood Hall Law School and earned a JD in 1980. She was admitted to the bar in Ontario in 1982 and is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the International Bar Association. Furthermore, she has served on Counsel to Counsel Roundtable in 2007, the securities advisory committee for the Ontario Securities Commission, ACG, and Women in Capital Markets.
Ms. Doherty has been recognized for her work on numerous occasions. Recently, she received a Lawyer of the Year Award, cross-border from ACQ5 Global Magazine. In 2014, she received the Women in Law Award from Lawyer Monthly Magazine. Furthermore, Ms. Doherty has been nominated for the National Business Book Award by Coopers & Lybrand and The Financial Times, and she was listed in Women in the Lead in Canada. Ms. Doherty has been honored to speak and moderate at numerous national and international conferences. She is an established author, publishing “Cross-Border Mergers and Acquisitions: A Tool Kit for Northbound Acquisitions, Mergers & Acquisitions” in 2008 and 1995’s “Directors Duties in Canada Managing Risk.”
