Richard D. McLellan, Lawyer (Retired), has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in administrative and regulated industries law, education policy, public policy, Native American law, Sub-Sahara Africa matters and campaign finance and election law.

Mr. McLellan began practicing law after earning a JD from the University of Michigan in 1967. He worked in a private practice for a year before becoming the administrative assistant to Former Governor William G. Milliken in Michigan. In 1973, he joined as partner of McLellan, Schlaybaugh & Whitbeck, and from 1982 to 2007, he served as the member-in-charge of the government policy group of Dykema Gossett PLLC. He founded the McLellan Law Offices in 2010, where he leads his practice in a number of specialized areas.

In addition to his primary roles, Mr. McLellan has taught as an adjunct professor in international studies at Michigan State University since 1993. He has also provided his services on several committees and boards, including with the Office of Governor-Elect in Michigan, the State Bar of Michigan, the Justice Initiatives Committee, the Michigan Supreme Court Historical Society, the Qualifications Review Committee, and the Michigan State University College of Law.

In 1983, Mr. McLellan was named the Small Business Adviser of the Year by the Small Business Administration, recognizing his value in helping communities around him. Earlier in his career, President Gerald Ford appointed him as an advisor to the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration as a member of the National Advisory Food and Drug Committee of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. In 1990, Mr. McLellan argued on the side of the appellee in the United States Supreme Court Case Austin v. Michigan Chamber of Commerce, 494 U.S. 652.

An expert in the field, Mr. McLellan has been involved with a number of professional organizations, including as the president of the Lansing City Club and Director of the American Justice Partnership. Additionally, he was a member of the American Chamber of Commerce in Italy, Republican National Lawyers, the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, the American Society of Association Executives, the Mackinac Center, and Crown America Life Insurance Company.
