Company: Wilson Elser
Location: Los Angeles, California, United States
Patrick M. Kelly, Attorney at Wilson Elser, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Civil Litigation.
Mr. Kelly has been a partner of Wilson, Elser, Moskowitz, Edelman & Dicker LLP since 1980, before the firm changed its name to Wilson Elser. He is the incoming 88th president of the State Bar of California, and recognized as a veteran trial lawyer. Mr. Kelly has harmonized his past in music with his law career, and is a former professional musician who played with surfer music groups like the Beach Boys. His law office still holds a replica Stratocaster signed by the band. Mr. Kelly likens the process of song writing to the decisive judgments of the legal field, though immensely more complicated. As president, Mr. Kelly intends to do everything he can to restore full funding to the courts of California, which have seen “…$650 million in cuts with a projected $540 million to come, causing massive staff layoffs, courtroom closures, and cuts in vital services.”
Mr. Kelly has appeared in the pages of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, and Who’s Who in the West, and is the recipient of a Marquis Who’s Who Humanitarian Award and an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. He is an alumnus of Pomona College and earned a JD from Loyola Marymount University in 1969. Mr. Kelly worked as an attorney of Southern Pacific and joined Bodle & Fogel in Beverly Hills, California. He was an associate of Yuson, Cassidy, Wyman & Bautzer, as well as Adams, Duque & Hazeltine. After joining the predecessor of Wilson Elser, he held positions as director of litigation and a regional managing partner of the firm.
Mr. Kelly holds numerous awards for his many years of legal leadership, including a 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Ski Defense Attorneys. He is an AV Preeminent Attorney of Martindale-Hubbell, and was recognized for his pro bono work with a Griffin Bell Volunteer Achievement Award from Dispute Resolution Services. Mr. Kelly’s daughter Laura chose to join his firm in 2008, fresh from law school, and is also active with the Association of Ski Defense Attorneys. He is also proud of his son, Patrick Kelly Jr., who is now a director of child and adolescent psychiatry at Johns Hopkins.
