Daniel J. D’Alesio Jr., Esquire, is a Senior Litigation Attorney for the Florida Board of Governors’ Healthcare Education Insurance Company (HEIC), serving the academic medical professional liability functions for the University of Florida. He also serves in the same capacity providing professional liability services for Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, Florida State University, and the University of Central Florida.  He has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Litigation and Insurance Law.

Mr. D’Alesio feels he owes much of his success to his positive attitude, being goal oriented, and his 25 years serving in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps, where his duties were many and varied, including duty as a prosecutor, defense counsel, commanding officer, instructor of law at the Naval Justice School, and staff judge advocate (general counsel) for Navy shore commands, and circuit military judge.  He retired from the Navy at the rank of Captain (O-6) in 1998.  He approaches each day practicing civilian law as he did in the Navy – a day of duty and not just another day on the job.

Originally a pre-med student, Mr. D’Alesio transitioned to psychology. He built on debate skills he had developed when taught by Sister Leo Mary, I.H.M. in eighth grade, and decided in his junior year of college at La Salle University to go to law school. With the help of the Navy’s Delayed Active Duty Program, he was able to earn a JD from Villanova University in 1973, while serving in the Navy Reserves.  After serving on active duty with the Navy for so many years, Mr. D’Alesio became a teen court magistrate judge in the Duval County Teen Court Program and acted as Program Administrator for the City of Jacksonville’s Juvenile Justice and Offender-Based Programs.  Mr. D’Alesio began his work with HEIC in 2002, and has served in several capacities, including Coordinator, Insurance and Risk, Associate Director of Claims and Litigation, and Senior Litigation Attorney. Since 1995, Mr. D’Alesio has taught as an adjunct faculty member and course developer for for Columbia College (Missouri).

In addition to numerous editorial roles during his legal career, Mr. D’Alesio is the author of “Proposals for Settlement in Florida Wrongful Death Cases: Time for a Change” and other peer reviewed articles. He was presented the Leadership Award from the Military Affairs Committee of the Florida Bar from 2008 to 2009, the 2008 Clayton B. Burton Award of Excellence from the Florida Bar, and a number of decorations from his time with the Navy, including the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, and a Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal. Mr. D’Alesio is a member of the Psi Chi National Honor Society in Psychology, as well as several legal societies. He is a vocalist and guitarist of the St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, and has supported the Diocese of St. Augustine as a board member on the Diocesan Advisory Board of Education. Mr. D’Alesio is married to Denise (Mutter) D’Alesio and is the proud father of Daniel, Cara, Amy Lyn, and Joseph, and a proud grandfather of five.
