John Arthur Owens, Senior Partner at Owens & Millsaps, LLP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Law.

Mr. Owens has been a long-serving attorney in Tuscaloosa County and one of its finest civic citizens, honored with the 2010 Pillar of the Bar Award from the Tuscaloosa County Bar Association as well as a 1995 Distinguished Service Award and 1985 Patron of the Arts Award from the Arts Council of Tuscaloosa County. He became involved in his profession after taking courses in business law while at the University of Alabama studying accounting.  He developed a liking to it, and friends in school were involved in it, which led to Mr. Owens earning a LLB in 1967 and entering practice. Mr. Owens has been a senior partner of Owens & Millisaps since 2003.

Mr. Owens is a Marquis Who’s Who Industry Expert and a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award who has appeared in the 6th and 9th editions of Who’s Who in American Law. He was born in Birmingham in 1939 to James King and Beatrice Owens, and served as an associate of Spiro & Phelps in Tuscaloosa from 1967 to 1968 before becoming an associate of Sam M. Phelps in the same city. Mr. Owens became a partner with Mr. Phelps in their new firm of Phelps, Jenkins, Gibson & Fowler in 1969. In 1994, Mr. Owens founded a firm in his own name, Owens & Carver, and in 1997 he became a partner of Owens & Almond.

Over the years, Mr. Owens has been a prolific patron of the arts, and remains a director of the board of the Tuscaloosa Symphony, as well as a member of the board of trustees of the First United Church Tuscaloosa. He has contributed to the Tuscaloosa Symphony, the Children’s Hands On Museum, the Junior League Tuscaloosa, and chaired the West Alabama division of United Way in the ‘90s. He was president of the Arts Council for Tuscaloosa County from 1981 to 1982. Mr. Owens has been as prolific in his professional life, and is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation, the Alabama Bar Foundation, and the Tuscaloosa County Bar Association, in addition to numerous memberships and leadership positions. Mr. Owens is also the proud father of Apsilah Geer and Terry Elizabeth with his wife, Dorothy Terry, and is the grandfather of seven.
