Mr. Patton is a shareholder practicing from the Washington office of Butzel Long, and recognized as one of the “Best Lawyers in America.” He has been representing clients since 1965 in criminal business litigation, corporate compliance and business counseling. Mr. Patton has handled several nationally publicized trials, including the defense of the “Travelgate” prosecutions, the defense of a major accounting firm, and the defense of two state governors. He has over 30 years’ experience in handling complex business and financial disputes in trials, appeals, arbitrations, mediations and SEC enforcement proceedings. Mr. Patton is the recipient of an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, and has appeared in the pages of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the East, and Who’s Who in the World.
Born to Thomas E. Patton and Alice F. Patton, Mr. Patton studied with the Catholic University of America, earning a JD, summa cum laude, in 1965. He initially joined Sullivan and Cromwell in New York City, and practiced as a member of Williams Connolly and Califano in Washington from 1970 to 1975. He briefly served as assistant general counsel of the U.S. Department of Energy, and partnered with Schander, Harrison, Segal and Lewis from 1979 to 1994. Mr. Patton has also taught with his alma mater since 1970, and has been a distinguished lecturer of the Catholic University of America since 1995, currently teaching securities trading under the 1934 Securities Exchange Act. He holds a seat on the board of regents and as a national arbitrator of the American Arbitration Association. Mr. Patton has also served on the board of directors of Elcotel Inc., IXI Inc., PCIX Inc., and the Vanguard Foundation.
In recent years, Mr. Patton has been involved in numerous SEC enforcement cases and in FINRA arbitrations. He is extensively engaged in employment litigation, employment dispute counseling, and preparation of employment law compliance manuals covering topics like Title VII discrimination, as well as ADA, ADEA, FMLA, and FLSA matters. Since 1980, Mr. Patton has been a member of the Washington World Affairs Council, and is a director of the General Counsel for Faces and Voices of Recovery. He has been editor-in-chief of the Catholic University of America Law Review, and a contributor to numerous professional journals, as well as the author of the “Federal Procedure Casebook” and “Securities Litigation.” Mr. Patton is rated AV Preeminent with Martindale Hubbell, and is the founder of the chair litigation section of the District of Columbia Bar. He is a member of the Cosmos Club, and the ABA Representative for Model Codes with the American Bar Association. Mr. Patton is the proud father of David Earl.
