Mr. Ray is a private practice attorney specializing in insurance defense, water law, banking litigation, and business litigation, with an emphasis on representing plaintiffs in personal injury cases in Fort Collins. Since leaving his family’s farm and ranch in Nebraska, he has worked in a variety of law positions, including a long career as judge advocate with the U.S. Marine Corps. Born in Sidney, Nebrasaka, Mr. Ray left his family farm and entered Colorado State University, going on to earn a JD with the University of Tulsa. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1974 and served to the rank of colonel in the judge advocate system. In the execution of his duties, Mr. Ray attended the National Institute of Trial Advocacy and the Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College. After his service with the Marines, he joined the largest law firm in Colorado’s northern region, returning to his collegiate home of Fort Collins. He wrote a book in 1985 titled “Colorado Water Law,” and was notably selected to serve with the judicial performance commission of the Colorado House of Representatives in 1994. Mr. Ray started his private practice there in 2006, and is a part of the civic community as a member of the Front Range Community College, Crossroads Safehouse, Fort Collins Airport Authority, and Hearts and Horses in Loveland.
In addition to recognition by his civic community, Mr. Ray has been recognized with membership in the Wyoming Bar Association, the Nebraska Bar Association, the Colorado Bar Association, and the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association. In addition, he is involved with the Litigation Council of America, the American Board of Trial Advocacy, Best Lawyers, Super Lawyers and the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He continues to assist his brothers in arms as a pro bono personal injury adviser for veterans at the Larimer County Bar Association. Outside of his office, Mr. Ray also frequents the Fox Acres Country Club and is a vestry member of the St. Luke Episcopal Church. He enjoys the natural beauty of Colorado for horseback riding, hiking, camping, fishing, and flying as a licensed pilot. Mr. Ray has made Fort Collins his home, and a home for his wife and three adult children.
